A government board has proclaimed a huge increase in royalty rates that would force many broadcasts such as Acoustic Pie off the air. Internet radio has always paid higher rates of royalty than any other radio medium. Because I love music and musicians, I'm proud of that. I don't understand why we're now being asked to pay even higher increases, making our fees even more out-of-line with satellite and broadcast radio.
We can't support the music we love if we're not broadcasting.
Because of the public outcry by musicians and listeners (thanks, everybody!), the collection agency agreed on July 13, 2007 to temporarily not enforce the impossibly high rates and negotiate with webcasters individually. This is a troubling compromise and not a permanent solution.
Our best hope is the Internet Radio Equality Act (IREA) which would set the increases to the same new rates paid by satellite radio. As of May 2008, this act is being considered for legislation by the
U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
Any and all developments on this problem are tracked at the Save Net Radio website. And I'll keep you posted here, too!
